This blog was urged upon me by some of my friends with whom I have been communicating about the 2004 presidential election. They suggested that rather than just passing along my thoughts on the politics of the day via email, I should record them in a blog. And so here it is! Anyone wishing to comment on any of my blog messages may do so by clicking on the word "Comments" below the message. Comments may be contrary to or to concur with what I say, or to comment on someone else's comment.

The Christian Right

Apropos of my last message alerting you to Sunday's upcoming Bill Moyers Public Television rebroadcast about the mission of Pat Robertson's Regent University, I note here a recently published book authored by  Chris Hedges titled, "American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America". (See below for biographical information on the author.) He articulates an unusual view of the far right Christian radical leadership and paints a very scary scenario.

He wrote an article 15 November 2004 titled "The Christian Right and the Rise of American Fascism"
. No major publication would print it at that time. He included it in his book and on a CSPAN2 Book TV presentation (2/21/07) he reads excerpts. You can either read the entire article or watch the excerpt video of the CSPAN telecast (6 min.) by clicking on one or the other links above.

He was interviewed April 6, 2007 by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. The video for this interview is in 3 segments, each about ten minutes long:

Chris Hedges Segment 1

Chris Hedges Segment 2

Chris Hedges Segment 3

About the author, I quote from a Wikipedia article on him:

Christopher Hedges: Hedges was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the son of a Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Thomas Hedges. He graduated from the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut in 1975. He has a B.A. in English Literature from Colgate University and a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, where he studied under James Luther Adams.

Hedges is currently a senior fellow at The Nation Institute in New York City and a Lecturer in the Council of the Humanities and the Anschutz Distinguished Fellow at Princeton University. He spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the Balkans. He has reported from more than fifty countries, and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, where he spent fifteen years.

Hedges was part of The New York Times team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism for the paper's coverage of global terrorism. He received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism.
